2017 Toyota Prius vs. 2017 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid in St. Louis, MO

Hybrids are growing more popular with both manufacturers and customers, because who wouldn't want to cut the time and money they spend at the gas pump in half? But now that there are more choices of hybrid cars, you have to do a little more research. If you want to know how the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid compares to the Toyota Prius, one of the first and still one of the most popular hybrids models, read our comparative review below.

2017 Toyota Prius vs. 2017 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid: MPG & Performance

Although the 2017 Chevy Malibu Hybrid sedan employs two electric motors to improve power, it's still the reliable Toyota Prius that takes the lead. The 2017 Malibu Hybrid gets an impressive 49 MPG city/43 MPG highway. The 2017 Prius, meanwhile, earns a stunning 54 MPG city/50 MPG highway.

Want even better gas mileage? The 2017 Prius Two Eco trim package has been specially tuned to provide up to 58 MPG city/53 MPG highway.

2017 Toyota Prius vs. 2017 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid: Interior & Technology

2017 Toyota Prius vs. 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Both the Toyota Prius and Chevy Malibu have large central touchscreens, but we're more impressed by the infotainment system in the Prius. It has split-screen capability, an optional 10-speaker premium audio system (the Malibu Hybrid has six speakers), and a built-in app suite. A full-color driver information display with an energy monitor also comes standard on the Prius, but is only available through an options package in the Chevy Malibu Hybrid.

Speaking toward cabin comfort, both of these models are available with heated front seats, but the Toyota Prius uses soft-touch materials and SofTex® upholstery, which has the look of leather but is lighter, softer, more durable, and more stain-resistant.

Finally, the Toyota Prius has more interior space for you to stretch out in and use. Drivers will enjoy more head and legroom in the Prius than in the Malibu Hybrid, and the Toyota Prius - being a hatchback - has more than double the trunk space with all seats in place.

2017 Toyota Prius vs. 2017 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid: MSRP

Every trim package of the Toyota Prius has a hybrid powertrain. The Chevrolet Malibu on the other hand, was designed with a standard combustion engine, and the model with the hybrid powertrain is based on one of the upper tier trims.

A base model Prius, the 2017 Toyota Prius One, costs only $23,475 MSRP* - a great bargain compared to the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, which starts at $28,750 MSRP, for anyone wanting hybrid-level fuel efficiency. The comparably equipped Prius Three Touring trim package is still more affordable as well, at $28,115 MSRP.*
