Sienna vs. Highlander: Engine Options & Efficiency

Every Toyota Sienna is powered by a 3.5L V6 engine rated at 296 horsepower and capable of towing up to 3,500 lbs. Parents can expect 19 MPG city/27 MPG highway. It is worth noting that the Sienna comes in AWD, if that is one of your primary reasons for considering an SUV. With AWD, expect 18 MPG city/24 MPG highway.

Most Highlander models use the same V6 engine as the Sienna, however the base model comes with a 185 horsepower 2.7L four-cylinder engine, and a hybrid edition of the V6 is also available.

The Highlander does have a slight advantage in fuel economy. Depending on drivetrain and trim level, drivers can achieve up to 21 MPG city/27 MPG highway with the V6. Check the fuel economy information provided for select Highlander models in our inventory. You will also be able to tow more with the Highlander - up to 5,000 lbs.

Sienna vs. Highlander: Interior, Storage, and Seating

Although the Highlander and the Sienna have seat the same number of passengers, the Toyota Sienna is undeniably roomier, and its sliding doors are easier for children to operate and enter and exit from. The second row seats also slide and tilt-up for easier third row access. If you take lots of road trips, often need to transport large items, or need a vehicle that’s comfier for a large dog, the Sienna makes more sense.

That being said, the Highlander does offer some premium features that you can’t find on the Sienna. It has more convenient flat-folding seats rather than removable seats, both heated and cooled seats, and more soft-touch surfaces.

Both vehicles are available with family-friendly features like the Driver Easy Speaker microphone and rear entertainment system with wireless headphones.
